What it is and how to get it.
Company success relies on strong leadership.
Across the healthcare industry, standards of excellence in all spheres - are a must... and a strong leader must uphold them. Consumers demand the best possible experience, and nowhere is that more true than in healthcare. An organization’s capacity to provide the best possible experience is only as strong as its leadership.
A leadership role is your opportunity to show an organization that you have what it takes to uphold their standards of excellence. One tool you’ll need to effectively lead is an Adaptability Mindset.
An Adaptability Mindset represents, at its core, how a leader deals with change.
When you’re able to accept disruption to the plan or protocol and then change course, you’re working with an Adaptability Mindset.
Adaptability requires adjustment to new requirements or conditions. In a leadership role we are further required at times to be bold enough to create new requirements or conditions. Successfully adapting to change in this way enables you to meet the challenges at hand and optimize your future strategy.
Great leaders are adaptable. Thankfully this is a skill everyone can develop.
Chances are that whether you worked the front lines in health care this year, or stayed home with loved ones, the pandemic provided opportunities for you to work on your Adaptability Mindset.
Here are some tips to start practicing every day:
Be the change agent. You can be resistant to disruption and get left behind or you can be at the forefront of the change that must take place. Choose to embrace it, champion for it and adopt change when it comes. You’ll be better prepared for what comes next if you face things head on with this mentality. Fighting it drains the energy you need to lead!
Keep your own well being in mind. Remember, to have strength and resilience you must invest in that self-care we talked about in "increase your well being and have more influence."You won’t feel fearless to embrace and champion change if you’re low on gas.
Focus on the wins. We all have hard days, but focus on the positives to motivate your team through those challenging times. Commit to ending your day or shift with an upbeat mood. When things don’t go your way, step back, breathe, and try to leave the experience on a positive mental note. It will help you strengthen your adaptability muscles. Because you know there will always be another opportunity to adapt.
Facing change and disruption with an Adaptability Mindset even before you feel “ready” will train your brain to be more prepared the next time. A leader must continually work on personal development and tap into those reservoirs of potential. It’s your responsibility to learn resilience and lead by example.
